"Ideas for Next Year"
| |
First off, congrats on holding such a wonderful event! This is by far the most enjoyable first year con I have ever attended ^_^ I have only minor gripes, and they have all ready been voiced on this forum, so no point in bringing them up again. Instead, I'd like to share a couple of suggestions that might help PMX grow away from being "just another anime con". 1. Asian Fashion. Gothic-Lolita fashion is becoming quite the fad over here; and the "Fruits" look of Harajuku is starting to become popular as well(Thanks to Yazawa Ai's "Gokinjo Monogatari" and "Paradise Kiss"). I feel that a fashion show featuring original costumes, EGL clothing, and current "high-fashion street wear" would be an natural extension of the cosplaying that all ready happens ^_^ 2.Adult panels I'm not talking about porn, per se... but panels that might be a little less that squeeky clean ^_^ Many Sci-fi cons have panels on cross-dressing, fetish gear and other subjects that aren't exactly child-friendly. They take place after 11:00, when all good kiddies should be asleep. I think some discussion panels on asian fetishes, cross-playing and other such related topics would let Mom feel like part of the convention, rather than just an escort to jr. 3. More Music The concerts this year were a huge success and if PMX can keep bringing these amazing musicians over, I believe this will quickly become what PMX is famous for ^_^ For next year, I would like to see some more rockin' female artists, like Yaida Hitomi, or BoA; so the concerts don't appear too male-dominated. Also, don't count out K-pop, a lot of it's pretty sweet ^_^ Thanks for taking your time to read all the way to the end ^_^ |

>There was an Indian Film Festival this past April: >http://www.indianfilmfestival.org/film04.html > >Bollywood films are looooooong epics. Not to mention, you need some >appreciation of the music behind the movies too. But it's worth a >shot. And you don't need one for J-pop/rock? India has a wide and vibrant popular culture, and not just their films. And it's suitably different too. I'm sure a few of their musical stars would love to perform in the US. Widya Santoso

With Bollywood, it is definately not an untapped market. It's similar with chinese pop music in America. There already have been many, many concerts and events especially in California. Many top chinese stars like F4, Jay Chou, Andy Lau, etc go to Las Vegas and sometimes make appearances in Calif (duh, theres so many large Chinese communities). For Bollywood, there are many theatres that screen the movies. Tons of the popular singers and actors already have concerts here with large audiences. The entertainment is just too huge for India (music/movies especially), and even a single convention covering just that would be too daunting. My Indian friend introduced me to Indian films last year. They are really good movies, but I doubt your average asian culture fan is going to have the patience to sit through 3+ hour movies (yes, most 99% of Indian films are around 3 hours), with singing and dancing in sporadic times in between (no matter how funny or serious the subject, unless it's a documentary of course). Even Boa has had a concert in Staples Center. The Chinese, Korean, Indian music markets already have a market in America (esp. California), unlike Japanese music. Which is why I think it's a good thing that we host a J-pop star. While the other asians have sold out concerts in packed 10,000+ seated arenas, big J-pop stars have just been recently playing in anime conventions. (Aside from smaller names, which have made small club venue shows.) But besides ranting (I've been studying non-stop since this is finals week for me) at 2am, that is my little thing. I think the focus of PMX is more the toward the east asian cultures (C/K/J/etc). And someday we can host the greatest Artist Alley with Asian-American artists. Traditional (real wallscrolls!), comic book, anime, painting, etc... How about some music and dancing. Cultural instruments, dances, etc...

Good idea with the fashion thing. About the music, how about some Jrock, since we didn't get Miyavi last year? Like Gazette, with the PS Company, Dir en grey, with god knows WHAT company, but everyone knows them, or Baroque? Also, ever since L'Arc~en~Ciel went to Baltimore (for the Lord knows what reason), there have been crazy amounts of people liking them now. Whichever floats the boat. And I don't think cross-play should be in the Adult Booth things, everyone enjoys it. X3

I agree with Osakastef. Variety is good. Chemistry would be a good group to get over here. Of course Utada would be my obvious choice, and it's not too much of a stretch considering her English debut and what not. Tommy, Bonnie Pink, Wyolica, Do As Infinity, DJ Krush, M-Flo would be great Japanese artists to have here. I would love to see David Tao, a Chinese artist, perform. Asian American artists should also get the opportunity. This IS PMX, so I think Asian cinema and music should be at the forefront. I love Anime, but like Osakastef said, we don't need another carbon copy attempt of AX. I sincerely hope that the PMX organizers will listen and get a wider range of musical guests here. Just my two cents! --- I'm cooler than a polar bear's toenail --- |
