"Any thoughts about a manga scanlation panel?"

Some friends and I have been trying to put together a manga scanlation panel for a while. We asked about it for otakon2k3 but got turned down, sadly. We all run scanlation teams, so we DO know what we're talking about... it's just a mattter of getting us all there, as we're kinda all over the continent. Having our own panel might get us to the con.

Thoughts?

Cons ARE reality. Everything else is just skits and cosplay.

I've never heard the term 'scanlation' before - but I take it this is scanning manga in and doing a translation?

You're welcome to request a fan panel once I have that system in place, which will be a bit closer to the con. (Experience shows that if you take panel requests too early people apply for one, but then plans change and you end up with a bunch of dead requests.)

Hey Zoner, that's exactly what it means. It puts the images online for all to view with the text replaced with English. It's kind of controversial (and you can IM me if you need me to tell you why).

Well, gee, you mean other than the blatant copyright infringement involved in putting a scanned work online?

That could be it, but I didn't want to say it and start a flame war, now did I?

I think it may be hard to do a panel like this at the convention because it is violating copyright laws. The same goes with showing fansubs, there is a grey area there.
(I actually do love reading scantransations which are unavailable in the US, such as Yotsubato!, Super Gals, Hana Yori Dango, Naruto, One Piece (some of which now are licensed but were not earlier))

I would only support scanlations if the American product was edited incredibly poor and unprofessional. I know a couple of manga in the US market in which the quality was worse than scanlations by fans; kinda pathetic if you ask me.
