4. "RE: Do we really need a Courtney Love Manga?"

What bothers me about the Courtney manga is not the fact that it will be adult oriented. That is quite normal for many anime and manga. And by saying adult oriented I don't mean pornographic. Anyway... What really bothers me is that Ai Yazawa is doing art for this. She's one of my favorite artists and I'm a bit shocked that she's doing something like this. It makes me wonder if one day, when I'm rich and self important (Like miss Love) I'll too be able to hire someone to write a magical girl manga about my life. I'm all for manga. Any type. Korean manwah is some of the best stuff I've read lately. And Shutterbox (By tavicat) isn't looking half bad. Now, you can't really say this isn't manga. It's being drawn by a japanese mangaka and written by an American. So, it is manga. But.. in my opinion, it's still not... right. It just blows my mind that this is happening really. I mean. Who would write a story about their life, and turn it into manga. No, wait. Magical Girl manga. God. I just think it's too weird. |

Welllllllllll. That's a bit of a stretch. Miyazaki does some of his manga in color. There are others too. Paradise Kiss was done in color I believe. The reason that comics aren't done in color in Japan from what I've heard has to do with the fact that black and white is cheaper. To print color and distribute color is more expensive. If we say it's manga because it's done with ink and tone, then that opens the door for quite a few things that are most certainly not manga, to be considered manga. This brings me to an interesting question. What makes manga, well, manga? I mean, manga, isn't it a word for a comic? Have we turned the word into something more than it is? So, Japanese comics are done in a certain style, and American comics in a different style. They are both still comics. What, then, truly makes manga, manga? Just a little question I was thinking about recently. |
